South Jersey will soon see these 3 public transit upgrades, Gov. Murphy says

New Jersey is set to dispatch more electric buses to the city of Camden, and the state also is organizing a one-year test of a new express shuttle line between Atlantic City and Vineland.

Gov. Phil Murphy announced several public transportation moves in a visit to Atlantic City on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The governor sat for a “fireside chat” with BINJE editor Tom Bergeron.

Murphy, who has less than a year left in his second term, also said that Trenton will use $5 million in federal assistance to “grow micro-transit options” around South Jersey. Micro-transit systems are designed to offer shared rides, generally in a defined area and stopping at specific destinations.

The governor’s office issued a release after the morning interview containing details on the three initiatives.

“Our administration is committed to strengthening public transportation in all corners of our state,” Murphy stated. “These new transportation options in South Jersey will not only better connect residents to jobs, schools, and healthcare, but also lay the foundation for a stronger and more interconnected regional economy.”

The express shuttle service experiment involves twice-a-day runs on weekdays. The South Jersey Transportation Authority, with assistance from New Jersey Transit, is to start the service in the fall of 2025.

Because many Cumberland County residents work in Atlantic City, the Vineland Transportation Center is a departure point for those headed to the Jersey Shore city but limited to public transportation.

Vineland Mayor Anthony Fanucci said he was happy to support the service.

“This long overdue program can be a positive step forward in connecting our residents to job opportunities in the gaming industry while also strengthening our regional economy,” Fanucci said. “Reliable public transportation is key to empowering our workforce and ensuring that Vineland continues to thrive.”

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small agreed with the benefits of this service.

“Any time we can bring more people to Atlantic City, it’s a win-win,” Small said.

The state started operating its first electric bus in the city of Camden almost three years ago. Eight more such buses will be deployed in Camden, according to Murphy.

The Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey hosted Murphy at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Chamber President Christine M. Renna said South Jersey has “critical and escalating” transportation needs.

“The governor’s announcement addresses these pressing issues directly and we are incredibly grateful for his responsiveness to our Chamber’s concerns,” Renna said.
