CCSNJ 2025 Primary Election Day Recap

Legislative Updates

On June 10, New Jersey voters took to the polls to select party nominees in the 2025 primary elections for all 80 seats in the General Assembly and to determine the Democratic and Republican nominees for Governor.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (CD-11) decisively won the Democratic nomination for Governor, defeating a crowded field that included Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, NJEA President Sean Spiller, Congressman Josh Gottheimer, former Senate President Steve Sweeney, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli secured the Republican nomination defeating conservative talk show host Bill Spadea and longtime Assembly Republican Leader, now State Senator Jon Bramnick.

A Sherrill vs. Ciattarelli matchup in November sets the stage for a dynamic general election between a well-known candidate in Ciattarelli, who nearly beat Governor Phil Murphy four years ago and a hard-working Congresswoman in Sherrill, who flipped the 11th Congressional District from Republican to Democratic in 2018.

In the General Assembly primaries, all South Jersey incumbents, and most statewide incumbents successfully retained their party’s nomination. However, a few notable races remain too close to call:

Legislative District 31: The Democratic primary is still undecided, with Jerry Walker and Barbara McCann Stamato currently leading. Incumbent Assemblyman William Sampson trails by approximately 200 votes.

Legislative District 32: In another close contest, Katie Brennan and Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla are leading, with Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez trailing by just over 100 votes.

Additionally, Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small won the Democratic nomination for re-election, solidifying his place on the November ballot.

The 2025 General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 4 and will determine the next Governor, as well as the new makeup of the General Assembly. As the campaign season unfolds, CCSNJ will continue to provide timely updates and opportunities for our members to hear directly from candidates and elected officials on the issues that matter most to South Jersey’s business community.
