Promising start to summer as Atlantic City’s May gaming win sees positive results across the board

Atlantic City’s total gaming revenue in May showed positive results in casino win, internet gaming win and sports wagering revenue, according to the latest figures released by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement on Friday.

Total gaming revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $510 million for May, reflecting an 8.3% increase from $470.9 million reported in May 2023. For year-to-date, total gaming revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $2.57 billion, reflecting a 13.1% increase from $2.27 billion reported in the prior year-to-date period.

“May provided a promising start for the summer season, and positive momentum has been building. Consumer interest has been strong, driven by must-see unique investments recently made in the casino hotels. Atlantic City’s diverse gaming, leisure and entertainment opportunities are providing abundant reasons for summer tourists to visit and stay,” Casino Control Commission Chairman James Plousis said.

“Inflation impacts both operators (in the form of costs of goods and wages) and consumers (in the form of prices), so it is especially interesting that, even in times of inflationary pressure, consumers still seem willing to spend their discretionary money with New Jersey’s casino operators,” Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and TourismStockton University School of Business, said.

Based upon filings with the Division of Gaming Enforcement, casino win for the nine casino hotel properties was $239.1 million for May, reflecting an increase of 5.2% when compared with $227.3 million reported in May 2023. Year-to-date casino win for the nine casino hotel properties was $1.11 billion, which is essentially flat compared with the year-to-date casino win for May 2023.

Internet gaming win in May reported by casinos and their partners was $192.1 million, reflecting growth of 19% when compared with $161.4 million reported in May 2023. For the year-to-date period, internet gaming win reported by casinos and their partners was $942.8 million, reflecting growth of 20.6% when compared with $781.5 million for the prior year-to-date period.

Sports wagering gross revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $78.8 million for May, reflecting a 4.2% decrease when compared with $82.2 million reported in May 2023. Sports wagering gross revenue reported by casinos, racetracks and their partners was $513 million for the year-to-date period, reflecting a 37% increase when compared to $374.5 million reported in the prior year-to-date period.
