This is our kind of girls’ day out! Every 56 days, Twannia and her friends donate blood together, followed by food and some much-needed catching up. Twannia says, "Look at your family that might need blood one day. Blood donation is one of the easiest ways to give back. You’re saving lives and it doesn’t take long." And during a pandemic, you can safely get together and do good!
Recipient Spotlight
Alexis Jarrett has dedicated her life to helping others. She runs her own creative branding agency and leads her ministry, The Cherished Woman. On top of those responsibilities, she also has to manage her sickle cell disease.
In the summer of 2019, Alexis was saved from a near fatal sickle cell crisis because of blood donors. Her hemoglobin – normally an average of 8.5 g/dL – dropped to 4 g/dL, placing her in critical condition. Doctors told her without an immediate blood transfusion she would risk organ failure. After three units of blood, rest and prayer from her community, Alexis fully recovered in a month.
Unfortunately, in March 2020, she experienced another sickle cell crisis, and blood was not immediately available at the hospital. She waited in pain and discomfort, but the hospital was able to get the blood she needed from the Red Cross and she again recovered.
Alexis appreciates the gift of blood donations because they help her live and fulfill her ongoing mission of helping others. To help highlight the importance of having blood on the shelf, she made a video (bit.ly/33g5CwP) to share her most recent crisis experience.
